Child Education on Prevention on Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) at Sasse Nursery and Primary and M.W Nursery and Primary School, Buea, South-West Region, Cameroon
Background
Child sexual exploitation and abuse remain serious child protection concerns that can have lasting physical, emotional, and psychological effects on children. Many children, especially those of primary school age, are unable to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate physical contact, making them more vulnerable to abuse by people they know or trust. Without age-appropriate education on personal safety, children may not recognize warning signs of abuse or know how to respond when their personal boundaries are violated.
Recognizing the importance of early prevention through education, the ZEF Foundation organized a Child Education on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) program at Sasse Nursery and Primary School and M.W. Nursery and Primary School in Buea, Southwest Region of Cameroon. The primary focus of the program was to teach children how to identify safe and unsafe touches on their bodies, understand that their bodies belong to them, and know that they have the right to refuse inappropriate touch regardless of who the person is.
The sessions were delivered using child-friendly and age-appropriate methods to help children understand the concept of personal boundaries, identify trusted adults they could report to, and encourage them to speak out whenever they felt unsafe or uncomfortable.
Objective Of the Activity
The overall objective of the program was to empower children with age-appropriate knowledge and skills to recognize, prevent, and report safe and unsafe touches and help them understand their personal body boundaries. sexual exploitation and abuse, thereby promoting their safety and well-being.
Target Groups

In total we had 55 pupils’ from Sasse Nursery and Primary School and 39 pupils from M.W Nursery and Primary School, making a total of 96 pupil’s

Results or outcomes
- 100% (94 out of 94) of the children received age-appropriate education on the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, including the difference between safe and unsafe touches.
- 96% (90 out of 94) of the participants demonstrated a clear understanding of safe and unsafe touches and recognized that they have the right to protect their bodies from inappropriate contact.
- 94% (88 out of 94) of the children identified at least one trusted adult such as a parent, teacher, or caregiver to whom they could report any form of inappropriate touch or abuse.
- 100% of the participating schools expressed support for the initiative and recognized the importance of integrating child protection awareness into school activities.

Conclusion
The Child Education on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) program was a successful and impactful initiative that equipped 94 children from Sasse Nursery and Primary School and M.W. Nursery and Primary School with essential knowledge and skills to protect themselves from sexual exploitation and abuse. Through age-appropriate and interactive learning sessions, the children gained a better understanding of safe and unsafe touches, the importance of personal body boundaries, and the need to report any inappropriate behavior to trusted adults.
